Like Yayoi Kusama, I knew nothing about John Martin until I saw an exhibition of his a few weeks ago at Tate Modern. What captivated me most was his beautiful mezzotints (self-taught), where he achieved the most beautiful velvet blackness. It was tangibly lovely.

I also loved his moonlit skies that cropped up in many of his oils and engravings.
