Part of a series of decorated initials, in which Rebecca renders in wood engraving original compositions of letters of the alphabet, comprising foliate and zoomorphic elements, along with subjects appropriate to the initial: in this case, an Avocet for the letter A.

These works honour a long history of illuminated or historiated initials, dating back to early Medieval works such as the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Book of Kells.
