A diverse array of butterflies float above an intense backdrop of colour in this semi-abstract painting. The work is the first in a series inspired by the journey of matter: from the chaotic cosmic soup of particles of the early universe to the development of beautiful, complex and fragile lifeforms.

Rebecca has used a palette knife to repeatedly apply and scrape paint to create a richly textured, multi-layered background. Onto this she has painted - in a decoupage style - intricate, delicate images of butterflies.
