Descent
Wood engraving,
A figure holds their head, in distress or despair, in the dark shadows. The common emotional and psychological metaphors of spiral, descent and darkness are given physical manifestation in this image: the low viewpoint revealing how far down the subject has come, and obscuring how far they may yet fall.
The foreboding staircase depicted in the piece is real - it can be found in the disused Aldwych Tube station.
