Hampstead Station
Oil on canvas board ,
Rich in colour, detail and depth, this work is part of a series of paintings celebrating the architecture and atmosphere of the London Underground.
This work shows the northbound platform at London's deepest Tube station, Hampstead, on the Northern line. As with many works in this series, a precarious viewpoint over the platform edge serves to highlight the elegant curves and lines of the tunnel.
In many of these works, Rebecca repurposes the advertising hoardings to turn the tunnels into virtual galleries. In this piece, recognisable artworks by Matisse and Banksy are joined by images representing Hampstead's historic Flask pub: a Grade II listed tavern whose glazed tiles are noted by English Heritage. On closer inspection, a hint of Edvard Munch may also be found!
