Day 10 - Drawing September
10 September 2014, 20:29

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting images every day. This afternoon I have been in Porthcawl on the south Wales coast, and it was a beautiful, hot sunny day. I wanted to draw the Porthcawl Lighthouse for today's sketches. The first image is in sepia ink and black charcoal pencil.

In the second image I have also included white goache, as the sky was becoming very hazy which lent a dark, mirror-like quality to the wet sand.

The tide was out this afternoon, so I walked back along the beach. The sand was drying in the most amazing, wavy ripples which reminded me of the intertwining dog motif in many celtic illuminated manuscripts and imagery.

Day 9 - Drawing September
9 September 2014, 21:19

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting images every day. Today I wanted to focus on a natural history study. I have produced sketches of a piece of Lucerne (pencil and ink) - a beautiful purple wildflower that grows all over the mountainside behind my home.

I have also done two studies of a buff-tailed bumblebee (pencil). I found this incredible insect outside the back door, but unfortunately it was too late to revive it with sugar water. So I took it indoors and tried to capture it for today's sketch. I used a magnifying lens to help to visualise the detail.

Day 8 - Drawing September
8 September 2014, 17:13

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting images every day. The first of today's images is a study of a mason wasp nest in pencil. The nest was given to me after the inhabitants had moved on! In contrast to the nest I drew last week, it is much smaller in scale and more delicate - the hexagonal cells being only about 1cm in depth, compared to 2cm in the first nest. The cells number in the tens, rather than the thousands. Both had been meticulously made out of paper pulp. In this image I have tried to capture the exquisite striations and patterns.

The second image, in acrylic, is an idea I had for a card and possibly a stained glass window, with a Celtic influence. I wanted to give an shot of colour!

Day 7 - Drawing September
7 September 2014, 15:56

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting one image per day. Today I spent the morning up Mynydd Tyle-Coch looking towards the Bwlch. To the right are two cauldron-like escarpments that are carved out of the mountainside. They are magnificent. In the top image I'm trying to capture the scale and enormity of one of these using sepia ink and pencil.

Also this afternoon I've been doing some rat sketches (Rattus norvegicus) for future works in my Underground series.

Day 6 - Drawing September
6 September 2014, 11:24

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting one image per day. I love ferns and I could have a whole garden full of them! I love their shape and the way the new fronds unfurl. At present I have a very steep garden in south Wales, where the climate is much wetter than in London and my many ferns are thriving.

In today's image I wanted to try to capture the unfurling dynamic of a new fern frond. To do this I have used pen, ink and gouache - a flexible medium which allows a lot of expression. I have really tried to capture the 'sprung' potential of the moment of unfurling.

Day 5 - Drawing September
5 September 2014, 18:58

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting one image per day. Today I have spent the afternoon up the Mynydd Tyle-Coch trying to capture the expanse of the valleys below. The top image looks toward Treorchy, the main town near my home. The second image from the very top of the mountain is looking towards the Bwlch.

I love the view of the valleys from these positions, and in my drawings which are using sepia ink and a tiny bit of white gouache I am really trying to depict the space and depth that the valleys possess.

My companion this afternoon was Daisy - a beautiful border collie, who may be the subject of a future sketch!

Day 4 - Drawing September
4 September 2014, 19:29

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting one image per day. Today I have been exploring the architecture of part of the inside of an abandoned wasps nest that was found in the loft. It was massive - about a foot across at the widest section - and must have housed thousands of individual wasps.

I have been trying to depict the shape and depth of the hexagonal cells. This was just a very small section of one layer of a chamber. The top study is in ink and gouache and the bottom study is ink only. I find ink to be a lovely medium to use for these detailed studies, as it is very flexible on the page.

Day 3 - Drawing September
3 September 2014, 17:50

This month I am taking part in a month of drawing, posting one image per day. Today I have drawn a pen, ink and gouache still life, using a slightly spooky figurine with a beautiful pinky-lilac scabious from the garden. I thought they offset each other in a lovely way.
